I contribute world-leading expertise to the field through collaborations with universities, museums, foundations, cultural organisations, and government cultural offices across Europe and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m the founder and director of <a href=\"http:\/\/unlockfair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unlock Book Fair<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thetagconference.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tag Conference<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/art-and-place.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Art &amp; Place Conference<\/a>, all landmark events in the world of graffiti and street art. Through my work, I have been instrumental in transforming the landscape of graffiti and street art studies, shaping more rigorous academic frameworks and institutional engagements.<\/p>\n<p>My involvement with the field dates back to the 1980s, when I emerged as a leading artist in the early Spanish graffiti scene. From 2006 to 2015, I taught the <a href=\"http:\/\/javierabarca.es\/en\/university-teaching\/\">first-ever bachelor class<\/a> on graffiti and street art, at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Complutense University of Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2008, I\u2019ve run <a href=\"http:\/\/urbanario.es\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Urbanario<\/a>, the leading Spanish-language research platform on graffiti and street art. My PhD (Fine Arts, 2010) and published texts are widely cited in specialised academic literature.<\/p>\n<p>When I am not travelling for commissions, I work between my office in Madrid and my home in the Asturias mountains on the lush northern coast of Spain.
